Which Discipline Should I Choose?

Dad says "Mera beta Electrical karay ga U.E.T Lahore se"
Mom says "Business Studies;Jobs me kuch nhi rakha beta"
Friends say "Mechanical kar le, warna pachtaae ga"
Teachers say "PIEAS jao, 100% job security "

*Too much confusion*

This is the story of every student who is turning over a new leaf of his life in terms of stepping into professional studies. It is a decision which is going to matter and delineate your future. That is why students are a bit extra conscious regarding taking any step. Mark Twain said and I quote:
"Two most important days in you life are the day you were born and the day you find out why"

The reason behind this confusion is that we heed too much what the people would say, whats society will think. Keep in mind dude; its your life. You have got limited time over here. so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. You somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

The best way to make decision is use analytical approach. Search the web for different disciplines. Browse the scope of each, nature of job, ease level etc. Take some aptitude test (many are available on web). Read the articles on the life of peers of different professions.(Scientist: Elbert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Engineer: Michel Faraday, like wise Dr. A.Q.Khan etc) the way they lived, they way they worked, how their stories became success stories. There will be some one whom your mind and heart will idealize.

After having sound understanding of all disciplines; take a deep breath; go into some silent corner of your home or somewhere, where you can't hear anyone, Anyone except your inner self. Somewhere, where the noise of the world can't distort the voice of your heart and with a peaceful mind ask yourself some questions:

What I am good at?
Doing what gives me real pleasure?
Do I want a white collar job(Software/Electrical/ Business Studies) or blue color job(Mechanical/ Civil)?
Will I be happy if  I pursue my passion or do I want to please people?
and similar questions.

Surely, you will get the answer.

After you have decided, stick to it. Don't even think what people will think. You can't make them happy. After ten or twenty years, you will be there with your choice, not the others. So make a decision that you are sure you will not regret. Leave the rest to Almighty Allah.
